Luis Arturo Aguirre

Luis Arturo Aguirre (b.1983) lives and works in Acapulco, Guerrero.  He has had solo exhibitions in Mexico and his work has been included in museum group exhibitions in Mexico, Belgium, Uruguay, Venezuela, France, Canada and the United States. Six photographs from his Desvestidas series were included in the exhibition Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today at the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio (2019). The exhibition will travel to the Ackland Art Museum (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) fall 2020.  Notable group exhibitions also include Reveal and Detonate (Develar y Detonar): Contemporary Mexican Photography CA 2015, CentroCentro Cibeles/PhotoEspana, Madrid, Spain (2015), Centro Nacional de las Artes/FotoMexico, Mexico City (2016), Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina (2017); Exposed/Expuesta, The Light Factory, Charlotte, North Carolina (2017); Secreto at La Hydra + Fotografía and Transversal, Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2016-2017). Devestidas was also presented at the Museo de la Mujer, Mexico City, Mexico (2016). Aguirre was presented at 5th Biennale of World Images, Paris, France (2015) and was selected for MOMENTA:  Biennale de I’Image, Montreal, Canada (2017) and for Photoquai Biennale des Images du Monde, Paris France (2015). He was awarded first prize at the 15th Photography Biennial of Mexico, Mexico City (2012) and received the prestigious Generation of Young FONCA Creators (2012-2013). He has been named one of “9 Mexican Photographers You Need to Follow” by TIME and has been featured in Vogue México among others. His work is included in collections of the McNay Art Museum, DECULTAH, Centro de la Imagen, Bank of America and Televisa Foundation.  His work was published in the books XV Bienal de Fotografía (Centro de la Imagen, 2014), Develar y Detonar, Fotografia en Mexico, ca. 2015 (RM, 2015) and Desvestidas - Luis Arturo Aguirre (INFRAMUNDO / HYDRA, 2019). He studied photography at the Centro de la Imágen, Centro de las Artes de Sam Agustín, Oaxaca, Mexico, the University of Loyola del Pacifico, Acapulco, Mexico and the Colegio de Fotografía: Gabriel Figueroa, Acapulco, Mexico.
